We are headed on vacation on Saturday to the Outer Banks, NC. This will be our 21st year of vacationing in OBX. Over the years, we’ve stayed in the various towns,  but we’ve basically fallen in love with Nags Head.

We use this vacation to reconnect with each other & with other family members.

Here’s the criteria I use for finding the house (in addition to # of bedrooms/bathrooms):

It must be oceanfront, have an outdoor shower, and a porch that has both a covered section & an uncovered section.

Jumping waves with daughters in OBX

We bring cornhole and volleyball. We rent beach chairs & umbrellas. We stock up on library books to read on the beach. We spend hours jumping waves. We buy a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle to do together on the coffee table.

We make our dinners, mostly on the outdoor bbq. We order a steamer basket at Armstrong’s, and we eat at lunch several times at Tortugas Lie . (Basically one of my favorite places on the planet.)

We used to try something new every year: parasailing, ocean kayaking, dolphin sunset cruise, a trip to Ocracoke, etc. In recent years, we’ve simply dialed it down to waking up & heading to the beach until sunset, repeat for 6 days.

Last year, a local OBX business played a pivotal role in one of my decisions for Westport Bike Rentals.

3g beach bikes
WBR’s fleet of 3gbikes.

I had already done my research on beach cruisers and had narrowed down my choices. 3g bikes was my first choice. Ironically, Scooter n’ Spokes in Nags Head used 3gbikes for their rental fleet.

My husband and I rented bikes as a test drive. My decision was confirmed. The bikes were comfortable, durable and stylish (both from a guy’s perspective & a gal’s perspective), and easy to ride.

Every year, I use OBX as a marker. What has happened in my life since the last time I walked on this beach?  What decisions have a made? How’s my health/happiness factor? And, every year I say to myself…wow, what an amazing year, filled with new experiences and the love of this family.

This year is no different. I created Westport Bike Rentals and became “The Bike Lady”!

I hope you all get a chance to unwind in your favorite place with friends and family this summer.

One final tradition: we tie dye. It makes for colorful pictures on the beach.
